Elementary School (Ages 6-10)

Students at ISG love school. They are happy, engaged citizens of the world. Students learn and inquire about the world around them through the International Primary Year Programme (PYP) and other valuable internationally recognized resources.

____________

INTERNATIONAL CURRICULUM

In the PYP all learning is based on inquiry and focused on real world context through transdisciplinary units. Learning with the PYP takes a global approach; helping children to connect their learning to where they are living now, as well as looking at the learning from the perspective of other people in other countries. It incorporates knowledge, concepts, skills, and actions. Children develop their knowledge and understanding of language, social studies, mathematics, science and technology, the arts, and personal, social and physical education. In the 2 and 3 years old class, we follow the ISG Toddler Curriculum which fosters intellectual growth, learning and independence and prepares children for the PYP curriculum.

The educational programme is complemented by the presence of subjects such as Physical Education (PE), Drama, Music, Choir and Art which are offered on a weekly basis by specialist teachers who are native speakers of English. The school also has a Library, to which each class is invited to go on a weekly basis to deepen the learning and implement reading skills.

ISG uses a core curriculum that is recognized internationally for best approaches to learning.  Readers and Writers Workshop is a model developed at Columbia University. During the workshop, students are at the centre, showcasing their work through writing, reading, and conferring.  Words Their Way supports spelling and vocabulary enrichment.

Italian CURRICULUM

Our differentiation approach in learning offers the possibility to Italian mother-tongue students to follow a curriculum which meets the requirements set by the Italian State school system and to international students to learn the language of the host country.

While following the same approach to teaching, each class follows the Italian programme which follows the Italian ministerial guidelines, with the aim of achieving the learning objectives required by the Italian school system, adopting textbooks that would be used in the Italian school.  Pupils who are not proficient in Italian are placed in the Italian language acquisition programme.

  • Punto ...e a capo! - Rizzoli Education
  • SUSSIDIARIO DEI LINGUAGGI - Gaia Edizioni
  • MAPPERTUTTI PIU’ - Rizzoli Education
  • TUTTI A SCUOLA CON RUDI - Gruppo Editoriale Il Capitello.

LEARNING APPROACH

The Primary Years Program (PYP)  is structured to support an international perspective and to develop a growth mindset in the individual and to encourage individual learning.

The IPC is an inquiry-based program, emphasizing students taking an active part in their learning. It incorporates knowledge, concepts, skills, attitudes, and actions. Children develop their knowledge and understanding of language, world studies, mathematics, science and technology, the arts, and personal, social and physical education.

TEACHING STAFF

Each class is assigned to an English mother tongue level certified homeroom teacher, supported by a bilingual assistant. The homeroom teacher supports the child’s journey in his/her Language, Academic and social development. Other specialist teachers offer experiences and activities in subjects such as Art, Music, Physical Education, Drama and Italian

student PLACEMENT

The students’ placement is generally based on the year of birth of the child. It takes into consideration the physical, social and emotional growth of the child.

DIGITAL LEARNING PLATFORM

Students use several digital resources both in class and at home to support their learning experience. Our primary platform is Google Classroom.  We include a variety of other digital resources, such as Khan Academy, for support and enrichment.

LANGUAGE SUPPORT PROGRAMME

Students from every country around the world, including Italy, may join ISG at every grade level. In Elementary school students are admitted after collecting their academic and personal information. In addition, the English language proficiency of the child is verified in order to organize the language support if needed. The support will be one-to-one or in small groups during school hours and will be scheduled for the time needed, in order to make the school experience of the child the most complete, joyful and effective as possible. The international students’ schedules will include classes of Italian as a second language.
